About Carl:
Carl Glassford grew up in Laguna Beach. He received his BA in Mass Media Communications from Brigham Young University in 1967. After three years in the U.S. Army serving as an Infantry Officer, he returned to California to continue a career in art and design. He was hired as an Art Director by Walt Disney Productions and went to work in a design studio on the edge of Disneyland. This was postgraduate school with a paycheck. Carl was not only involved with marketing support for Disneyland, but also participated in the print needs for the opening of Disney World.
Over the next years, many opportunities to move up the career ladder were offered. Finally, a position in television as a Graphic Arts Manager came along. For the next several years everything was in television format. Carl also took advantage of the Army G.I. Bill and completed two MA programs from Pepperdine University. In 1974, he graduated with a degree in Education. Then in 1976, Carl earned a MA in History.
When an opportunity to teach at Golden West Collage was offered in 1986, Carl moved to the classroom to teach art and graphic design. This was an interesting move, as the computer was just coming on the scene as a teaching tool. Now, it is the tool in graphic design. It is also a great teaching delivery system for contemporary learning.
Carl has also been active producing outside projects in packaging, publishing, corporate identity, lettering and graphic design. It is a plus to go into a store or look in a magazine or watch a movie trailer and see one’s work displayed. He even designed the city seal for the town where he and his family lives.
In the fine arts field, Carl has displayed his work in the Laguna Beach art festivals and galleries in Southern California. He has also done a lot of commission portraits, especially as gifts for retiring executives. He has an art book published by Walter Foster featuring how to draw line art with pen and ink.
Carl Glassford has been a Professor of Art at Golden West College since 1986
