Homework: Review IT book—Scaling type p14, span columns p19, placeholder text p20, import word text p22. Read Ch2 and study for Anatomy Quiz p16 in Non Designer's Type Book. Review current magazines for bios.

Review Jobs story in class. Review samples.
Lecture: Leading p46, kerning and tracking to fix widows, em space vs en space pgs 68–69 in NDTypebook. Design Element–PROXIMITY. Work one on one with students on layout questions, write your name on the board for help. Purchase and/or review current magazines, base bio layout on current styles. HOMEWORK: Read "Pullquotes" on pg131 in and use it in Jobs bio. Scher Bio due at end of class.

Week 4–Sep 17
Lecture: NDTypebook Ch 4–7 Punctuation incl. drop cap, hang punctuation with type/story/optical margin alignment selected, baseline shift, text wrap, and adding a 2nd page to layout. Design Element–Alignment. Begin to use the reviewed elements for credit on your papers.

Week 5–SEP 24
Lecture: Ch 14–17 Spacing and Alignment.
Text wrap technique
Use find/change feature, cmd-f in Indesgn.
Begin to use the elements and techniques discussed in class on papers.
Week 6–OCT 01
Lecture: Ch 18-21, Headlines, Subheads, Pull quotes, Captions, Emphasize Type (these are all techniques to use in your layouts!
Review headline examples in class, review keyboard comnds to manipulate text sizes–cmd shft comma or cmd shft period.
How to create cmyk color from Pantone swatches.
Design Element–Repetition.
Group Critique. Print Jobs bio–get into groups for discussion/feedback.

Week 7–Oct 08 Get Instructor approval for midtern Editorial layout
What is a corporate typeface? Take a look at the top 50 best selling typefaces.
Keep current with font classifications and how to choose a font.
Lecture: Design Element–Proximity & CONTRAST. Work in class to develop midterm, it is due next week. Write your name on board if you want one-on-one help with midterm. Review spreads, bleeds & crops. Check off 2 magazine examples. Next week Midterm Due—you will put pdf on server & print a scaled to 90% & trimmed laser.

Midterm: 2 page magazine–Editorial that includes text, images, callouts, captions. Scan images and layout entire 2 facing pages exactly. Measure every detail and recreate. The challenge is to create exact copy and learn from/get experience with the existing layout specs. We will work on midterm in class. It is due at end of class. We will print at 90%, include bleeds and crops, cut at crop marks for clean edges.
Week 8–Oct 15 Intro to Final Project: 20 page brochure printed professionally from mac.com
Midterm Due end of class — print in color, put pdf on server. Class critique. Bio grades. They will be continually updated as you turn in and re-do reports.
Week 9 OCT 22 Lecture: Brochure design and layout. Contrast/Alignment/Proximity/Repetition.

Week 14 Nov 26 Lecture: Type Design [a typographic solution] using the phrase "I survived Typography Class "—GWC Fall 2008. Check out Paula Scher's style of "illustrating with type" or mk12's macho box for reference. Use hierachy of size of type to create layering effect, use large quotes as a design element, lines, vector objects and positive negative space. •Turn in all work in folders: editorials/midterm/final and in those folders save each project as pdfs in a pdf folder and jpgs in a jpg folder
